James Layson Kester was born on April 12, 1822 in Vigo County, Indiana. James married Ruth Ann Morse on February 22, 1845 in Johnson County, Iowa. In 1859, James and his family moved from Iowa to California. In California, they first settled in Napa County, and in 1867 they moved south to San Luis Obispo, California. James made his families home at Old Creek, Morro Township, San Luis Obispo County, California. He died at age 68 on December 24, 1890 in Los Osos, San Luis Obispo County, California. James was buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County, California.
